Despite delay, navy is committed to satellite communication program

Article Abstract:

The Pentagon's fiscal year 2005 budget request reported the reliability of Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, and Navy on the Navy's Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) and would receive $571.1 million, far less than the $790.5 million anticipated in the 2004 budget. Lockheed Martin and Raytheon are competing for system development and demonstration contract award in the potentially $8 billion MUOS program.

Royal navy combatant decommissioning plans confirmed

Article Abstract:

British Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon has confirmed that the Royal Navy would decommission a number of major surface combatants from its fleet to overcome a $2.04 million deficit in operational costs for 2004. Possible new homes for the decommissioned vessels include Argentina, Bangladesh, Thailand, Brazil, Ecuador, Portugal, and Chile.

Turnabout in Taipei

Article Abstract:

The sudden change in Taiwan's defense preparedness as it reduces defense expenditure and conscription and postpones decision on an arms buy from the US at a time when China continues its military buildup is perplexing. A study of the ethnically divided domestic Taiwan politics may provide some answers.
