Diesel subs depart from convention

Article Abstract:

Navies throughout the world are acquiring submarines powered by the Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) systems. The AIP systems are based on reformer fuel cell technology which developed successfully, could result in the creation of new conventional diesel electric submarines without diesel engines. These new submarines will be capable of increased endurance, smaller crews, lesser levels of maintenance, greater availability and cost effectiveness.
