Dolphin class submarines on trial

Article Abstract:

Howaldtsewerke Deutsche Werft and Thyssen Nordsewerke have performed further trials for INS Dolphin, the first of three new Type 800 Dolphin class diesel-electric submarines, at the Baltic Sea. The tests were performed in preparation for the scheduled delivery of the vessel to the Israeli Navy in mid-October 1998, which will retire its three Gal class submarines for the accommodation of the Dolphin class submarines. The INS Dolphin, which was designed by Ingenieurknotor Lubeck, displaces 1,800 tonnes submerged and is equipped to dive to a depth of 350m with maximum submerged range of 420nm at 8kt. The Dolphin class is expected to assume the role of interdiction, surveillance and special forces operation under the Israeli Navy.

Rival teams submit FFG update bids

Article Abstract:

ADI and Tenix Defence Systems have submitted their respective bids for the design, equipment acquisition and implementation phase of the Royal Australian Navy's FFG Upgrade (FFGUP) program Project SEA 1390. The winning contractor is expected to land an estimated $651-million project. The FFGUP aims to upgrade the anti-air warfare and anti-ship missile defense capability of six RAN FFG-7 Adelaide-class frigates and provide through-life platform supportability after 2010 to the vessels. The project will also equip the vessels with a new electronic attack capability, Link 16 connectivity, a torpedo defense system, a mine avoidance capability and an improved hull-mounted sonar.
