Emerging opportunities in optical sensing and exploitation

Article Abstract:

The Ongoing US JIGSAW programme, a joint effort of the US Army's Future Combat Systems and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), utilizes an airborne LADAR transmitter/sensor and sophisticated image processing and visualization software to penetrate dense trees and camouflage in order to detect, identify, and characterize targets on the battlefield. The JIGSAW team has designed a system that models payloads to be flown on very small vehicles or larger, high-altitude Tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (TUAVs).

Tailored tactical surveillance

Article Abstract:

The ongoing military operations have highlighted that there is a problem of complexity that is dramatically different sensing environment while focusing on the need for persistent global and theatre surveillance. A review on several new sensor concepts and new technologies for urban warfare is presented that include FIREFINDER radar system, LACOSTE, and ISIS (Integrated Structure Is Sensor).

Precision identification and persistent sensing

Article Abstract:

Precision identification is concerned with determining the validity of a target and is a concept that requires reasoning about form and function, about context and history, about salience and intent. Hence, an array of programmes to engineer solution for particular sensor interpretation tasks is investigated at DARPA.
