Early 1961 stood out as a particularly tense moment in the long history of the Cold War and the speech given by Nikita Khrushchev on January 6, 1961 truly inflamed the East-West political conflict. The open challenge to the West given by Khrushchev that Soviet Union would help the peoples striving for their independence through the over throw of pro-Western governments in these brushfire wars was exactly taken that way by the officials in Washington.
