Fresh counterinsurgency doctrine: Field Manual 3-24/Marine Corps Warfighting Publication 3-33.5 represents a new era for small wars

Article Abstract:

The new Counterinsurgency (COIN) Manual brought out by the U.S. Army and Marine Corps, called the Field Manual 3-24/Marine Corps Warfighting Publication 3-33.5, is a single source document that discusses application of effective COIN doctrine to current and future wars. The manual is directed primarily at leaders and planners at the battalion level and their superiors. It addresses issues of institutional expertise, competence and good relations with locals in COIN operations.

The Bush doctrine and the war on terrorism

Article Abstract:

The Bush administration has undertaken a campaign against terrorism, following the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. It is suggested that this campaign should follow four phases: retaliation, retribution, contribution, and long-term solution. Each phase is discussed.
