GE delivers first production super hornet engines

Article Abstract:

General Electric Aircraft Engines delivered two F414 engines to the US Navy for installation in F/A-18E/F Super Hornet jet fighters. The delivery is part of a contract for 28 F414 engines and for an eventual total of 114 engines due on 2001. The engine has undergone 25,000 hours of testing, 12,000 hours of factory test and 6,000 hours of flight test. The Navy and the Defence Department considers the F414 engine as a model development project due to the incorporation of modern technologies.

Newport news acquires West Coast yard

Article Abstract:

Newport News Shipbuilding will acquire Continental Maritime Industries of San Diego, CA. The acquired company, which has 350 employees and generates an annual revenue of $40 mil, is a provider of ship repair facilities to US Navy ships. Newport News and Shipbuilding is currently waiting for approval from federal regulatory officials. The acquired company will be operated as a wholly-owned subsidiary that will primarily focus on ship repair contracts in the West Coast.

Initial runs successful for JSF engines

Article Abstract:

Pratt and Whitney conducted a successful initial test of its F119 jet engines for the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) and X-35 concept aircraft. The tests involved vibration surveys, fan and core break-in, performance calibrations and engine control stability evaluations. The type of engines tested are to be used in aircraft carrier-based, conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) aircraft and short take-off and vertical landing aircrafts.
