Global reconnaisance-strike

Article Abstract:

The Defense Dept's independent National Defense Panel (NDF) reported that the armed services must undertake comprehensive tranformations to meet future strategic challenges, especially anti-access threats to US power- projection capabilities. The NDF noted that the military forces needs to develop capabilities which are considerably different from their existing ones. This means that the US must dramatically reduce its dependence on overseas base access. It may be able to do this by shifting the leading- edge firepower responsibility to extratheater-based global strike aircraft, sea-based long-range missile platforms/stealthy carrier air power and relatively small groups of stealthy theater-based multi-role fighter aircraft.

Air power transformed

Article Abstract:

Debates over US air power have focused around the extent to which the nation can rely on existing, accurate, air-delivered, standoff weapons in lieu of ground forces to achieve war theater objectives while minimizing the number of US troop casualties. It is clear, however, that US air power capability has evolved to offer war theater commanders numerous options for destroying enemy forces from standoff ranges with virtual impunity. Existing US air power also provides the potential for achieving strategic effects from the outset of a joint military campaign through the ability to attack core enemy vulnerabilities with both shock and simultaneity.
