Guarding America's coast at the dawn of the 20th century

Article Abstract:

Naval strategist Capt. Alfred Thayer Mahan, Secretary of the US Navy John D. Long and Commodore Winfield Scott Schley are responsible for countering a possible sudden appearance of Spanish warships in an era before long-distance radio communications. The challenges faced by the US Coast Guard and the US Customs Service while guarding America's ports are discussed.

'Ready now, sir!': Nimitz the Destroyerman, muddied but unbowed

Article Abstract:

An overview of the history of U.S. Navy destroyers is presented with the approach of the 100th anniversary of the commissioning of the first U.S. Navy destroyer, the 'Decatur.' The ship survived an accident in 1908 when then junior ensign Chester W. Nimitz ran it into a mud bank just south of Manila.
