Incoming fire: Sniper-detection systems support counter-insurgency operations

Article Abstract:

The U.S. defense industry is looking for cheap, lightweight man-portable detection systems capable of providing accurate information that can be quickly passed up the chain of command via network-centric processes, providing potential for the cueing of assets for surveillance and return-fire capabilities. The industry's objective is to acquire systems capable of detection, location and engagement of fire sources to defeat threats such as small arms fire, rocket-propelled grenades, anti-tank guided missiles, direct-fired mortars and manportable air-defence systems in sufficient time to allow automatic and man-in-the loop response options.
