Special report: loud & clear

Article Abstract:

Innovations in digital electronics have resulted in the development of multiband military radios whose functions are determined by software instead of hardware. This development means that the digital radios will eventually replace conventional single-function, single-bandwidth military radios such as VHF, UHF, HF. The US Armed Forces' Joint Tactical Radio System is developing tactical communications that would provide for the requirements of all four services.

Special report light combat loads

Article Abstract:

Advances in high frequency radios have resulted in the development of tactical radios that unable military services to operate throughout two or more bands. Another development is that of software-programmable radios in which various waveforms can be loaded as software logarithms instead of being implemented by hardware. The new tactical radios have all the combined capabilities of VHF, UHF and HF. Among the firms which have introduced multiband tactical radios are Raytheon and Harris RF Communications.
