Leonard Fielding Chapman, Jr., 1913-2000

Article Abstract:

Gen Leonard F. Chapman, Jr, was the 24th Commandant of the Marine Corps and was to lead the service through one of its most turbulent and crisis- filled eras when he assumed his post on Jan 1, 1968. Chapman was able to develop a recruiting strategy that enabled the Corps to meet its manpower quotas when military conscription was abolished in the early 1970s. He was also astute in his treatment of the social and racial problems that were plaguing the Corps during the same period. Chapman also fought hard to ensure that the Corp received essential equipment and machinery. In retirement, he continued to take a keen interest in Marine Corps affairs. Chapman died of cancer on Jan 6, 2000.

It employs the concept of expeditionary maneuver warfare (EMW) to inform the emerging joint integrating concepts for seabasing and forcible entry operations in order to ensure that the Marine forces remain ready, relevant, and fully capable of supporting future joint operations.
