Looking into naval crystal ball

Article Abstract:

The requirements of the United States Navy Fiscal Year budget for 2004, which will be debated by the Congress, are discussed. Work bringing security improvements to the physicality of major US Navy vessels, funds for the modernized aircraft carrier, design research dollars for smaller combat vessels and submarines carrying cruise missiles, target acquisition systems that have to be fitted upon ships and aircrafts, and recognition of forward sea-based TBMD systems integrated with response plans for BMD systems are some of the needs of the US Navy.

The outward-looking face of the US naval shipbuilding & systems integration industry

Article Abstract:

The US naval shipbuilding and systems integration industry has a protectionist mentality, unwilling to share its market with foreign firms. This could be understandable considering that the US Navy has shrunk to a 325-ship navy from the almost 600 ships it had in the 1980s. Its protectionist tendency, however, could be counterproductive since it prevents US suppliers from benefitting from international business opportunities. Despite this protectionism, foreign suppliers have about a 8%-9% share of the US naval equipment market.
