Article Abstract:

Hughes Naval and Maritime Systems pres J.M. Pennisi said the LPD 17 program was his firm's contribution to the Navy's needs to counter threats in the 21st century. In terms of design and development, the ship is geared towards survivability, flexibility and sufficient combat power to confront numerous threats. The LPD 17 program provides the ability to transport Marines to battle and its weapons command configuration enables it to perform a major role in air defense operations.

Advanced submarine armament

Article Abstract:

IDAS, a light-weight fiber-optically linked missile for operations against ASW helicopters and for precision strikes against surface target and targets on land in the vicinity of the coasts and MURAENA, a small caliber automatic gum system operated from the submarine's are used as new weapon by the submarines after the Cold War. Further a brief description on the operational concept, integration into the submarine and the future prospects of these weapons are presented.

The OWL Mk-II is a versatile remotely operated vehicle with a top speed of 35 knots that carries a suite of sensors, video cameras, sonars, and weapons systems. It has been deployed by the US since 1993, and is made by Science Applications International Corp., and NAVTEC Inc.
