My first taste of combat

Article Abstract:

The author narrates his first combat experience at Guadalcanal after joining duty with Company D, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division (1st Mar Div) at Camp Lejeune. Though the landing on Red Beach was uneventful, the battalion was almost run over by stampeding cattle on the way to an airfield, and the author had to spend the night in a foxhole in the drizzling rain.
