NNS breaks ground for new CV center

Article Abstract:

Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co (NSS) has started the construction of the Virginia Advanced Shipbuilding and Carrier Integration Center (VASCIC) in Newport News, VA. The 230,000-sq-ft VASCIC, which is set to open in mid-2001, is intended to be the center for systems integration and evolving technology in aircraft carrier manufacturing. The facility was given a budget of $58 mil for the three-year construction, while $40 mil will be infused for its operation, which will also be handled by NSS.

Two teams to complete for DD-21 contract

Article Abstract:

Lockheed Martin teams up with Bath Iron Works while Ingalls Shipbuilding joins Raytheon Systems Corporation for the US Navy's DD-21 land-attack destroyer program. The teams will be given $105 mil to conceptualize, design and build a virtual prototype of their proposal within three years. The US Navy had to form two teams to accomodate Raytheon as systems integrator for the destroyer's design. The two teams have until mid-July 1998 to submit their plans.

High-speed SEALION is slated for transformational experiments

Article Abstract:

The U.S. plans to use SEALION (Seal Insertion, Observation, Neutralization) technology demonstration watercraft in future operational experimentation sponsored by the Department of Defense's Office of Force Transformation. SEALION would explore modular, high-speed, high-performance littoral craft and their application beyond the tactical level of war.
