Northern Iraq faces increased instability in 2005

Article Abstract:

The Sunni insurgency and the forthcoming constitutional debate in Iraq are likely to overlap during 2005, which will provide an impetus for continued resistance by militant Sunni groups. The insurgent activity in the strategically significant and ethnically mixed Mosul area, and the interaction between the Sunni insurgency and ethnic violence in northern Iraq are examined.

The factors determining the actions of Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP), if the Kurdish opposition parties play a central political and military role in the countryEs future following a regime change, are examined. The party welcomes IraqEs regime change but fears the process and the prospects of Turkish intervention in northern Iraq.

Short-term stabilisation in Iraq could have long-term costs

Article Abstract:

The Coalition's decision to invest militias with greater responsibility for local security, which is a short-term necessity, could have far-ranging implications for Iraq's political future. The unstable situation created by this short-stabilization and the United Nation's role in the securities operations in Iraq are reported.
