Reshaping the European AFV industry for international competitiveness

Article Abstract:

Europe's armored fighting vehicle (AFV) industry is undergoing restructuring, and the rate and end result of this restructuring depend on several key factors, including security, political frameworks, military requirements, economic resources, technological progress and competition. The restructuring is being carried out using three strategies: ad-hoc cooperation programs; framework industrial cooperation schemes; and strategic industrial alliances. The European AFV market, excluding the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), is estimated at DM4.6 billion (2.38 billion ECU) annually, which is about one-third of the DM14.21 billion world market.
