Self-assessment

Article Abstract:

India's drive to acquire more updated weapons has gained momentum with PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee's election victory in the recent general elections and the military coup in Pakistan. Analysts say the short-term cost of the acquisition of jet trainer aircraft, naval warships and electronic warfare systems could exceed $3 billion. Security analysts have warned against an impulsive weapons procurement progam and said the Indian armed forces should first develop a coherent modernization plan.

Breathing space

Article Abstract:

Reduced threats and smaller defense budgets are expected to restrict military procurements in the Middle East. While the threat of a conventional war in the region has been reduced, the danger posed by guerrillas or separatist groups in Sudan, Iraq, Algeria and Lebanon will continue. The military forces in the region are expected to address the new forms of threats by changing their doctrine and procurement systems.
