Shifting focus: Armored vehicle protection adapts to new threats

Article Abstract:

Armored vehicles are changed over the years to meet the changing threats, with emphasis shifting from heavy armor of the Cold War era to the lighter vehicles of present years. While combinations of new armor materials are contributing to their increased mass effectiveness, vehicle designs are emerging with better suitability to withstanding improved explosive devices (IED) attack.

Combat vehicles take on urban warfare

Article Abstract:

The gradually growing role of armored vehicles in urban operations following their successful use in the capture of Baghdad and Basra by US and British tanks in 2003 is discussed. In view of the growing urbanization of the world, the employment of tanks and other combat vehicles in future urban operations appears increasingly unavoidable.
