'Spy rock' incident points to Russia's security state mentality

Article Abstract:

The timing and presentation of the Russian spy rock story suggests an attempt to smear independent non-governmental organizations by suggesting they are tools of foreign influence. President Vladimir Putin has in the past sought to balance those who advocate increased openness with those who desire a return to a more traditional security state but he evidence suggests he is favoring the latter.

The federal protection service comes of age

A decree signed by the Russian President Vladimir Putin has reorganized the Federal Security Services and the Federal Protection Service has assumed new prominence. The role of the increasingly influential Federal Protection Service (Federalnaya sluzhba okhrany - FSO), which is emerging as the President's personal intelligence arm, is examined.

Australia commits to security in Papua New Guinea

Article Abstract:

Australia has committed around A$800 million (US$610m) to increase the security of Papua New Guinea, which is aiming to prevent a spillover of transnational security threats. The security challenges and the impact of the Enhanced Co-operation Program on the Australian foreign policy are discussed.
