Thales looks ahead to a new generation of unmanned mine-countermeasures systems

Article Abstract:

Thales Underwater Systems, France, is expecting a contract from the French defense procurement directorate to demonstrate its new synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) minehunting technology with an autonomous underwater vehicle. The contract, if awarded, would be a significant step in the company's drive to position itself for the next generation of mine countermeasures (MCM) and rapid environmental assessment systems which would be largely unmanned.

Thales to upgrade Greek S-class frigates

Article Abstract:

Thales Naval Nederland has won EUR257 million contract against Raytheon for the mid-life modernization of six Hellenic Navy S-class frigates plus two options. The S-class would be provided with ship-and force-level automatic threat evaluation, weapon assignment and sensor allocation features for anti-air warfare, supported by electronic warfare means.

Institutes collaborate on public safety work

Article Abstract:

Defense research institutes FOI in Sweden and TNO Defense, Security and Safety at the Netherlands have combined forces to jointly target the market for crisis management. TNO and FOI are also carrying out contracts for undisclosed European organizations to the study the potential dangers of certain types of explosives that could be used by terrorists.
