The battalion judge advocate: A counterinsurgency force multiplier

Article Abstract:

Counterinsurgency (COIN) operations should adhere to the rule of law for which a judge advocate (JA) is assigned to each Marine infantry battalion during Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) to act as a COIN force multiplier. By virtue of training and experience in operational law, the JA is able to advise the battalion commander on tactical issues and assist coalition efforts to establish peace by winning over the Iraqi people during COIN and stability and support operations (SASO).
