The light tank: viable concept, or dangerous illusion?

Article Abstract:

The development of the light-tank concept continues to both elude and seduce armament operators and designers worldwide. Efforts to create a light tank for military use have been marked by exceedingly few designs that are really successful, a robust share of totally impossible and abysmal design failures and an overwhelming majority of outputs that are lukewarm. Efforts to create a light tank are also met with concerns on the system's affordability, with light tanks required to handle all medium- and low-intensity missions, including peace-making and peacekeeping applications, for the system to be affordable. Light tanks are also regarded as acceptable, but not the best, solution for use in the said mission types.

New armed forces for a new century

Article Abstract:

A number of key trends are immediately discernable from an evaluation of compilations of data on military forces worldwide. One trend is the generally increasing shift toward professional armies and away from universal conscription, with the notable exceptions of Germany and Israel. Another significant trend is the widening gap between the most fundamental purpose of armed forces in western countries and the very basic purpose of the armed forces of the rest of the world.
