Torpedo defense - an overview

Article Abstract:

Torpedoes continue to be the main threat to surface ships and submarines. The present crops of attacking torpedoes are faster and have wider range, have long endurance, equipped with sensor capabilities, and have built-in intelligence and re-attack capabilities. The three types of torpedoes are the straight homers, the wake homes ad teh acoustically homing torpedoes. Torpedo defense solutions for surface ships and submarines are discussed.

The development of new German Heavyweight torpedo DM 2 A4 included a realization concept followed form the very beginning that excludes technological risk. This system is based on the DM 2 A3 torpedo; additional, minor optimizations and measures to improve capabilities also had significant effects on overall performance and had to be recognized in the development.
