UNITA raises the stakes in Angola with MiGs and combat helicopters

Article Abstract:

Intelligence sources have reported that the rebel Union for the Total Independence of Angola (Unita) has acquired six Russian Mi-24 combat helicopter gunships and six Russian MiG-23s from Ukraine as its leader increases the tension in the Angolan civil war. There is a lot of speculation as to how Unita will deploy its air force against the incumbent Angolan government, which is being supported by the US. A source says that the rebel group will likely use the aircraft in conventional, mobile, combined arms warfare with the Angolan government.

Russian aspirations airborne with Sukhoi's Golden Eagle

Article Abstract:

Sukhoi Design Bureau's fifth-generation fighter demonstrator, the S-37 Berkut, is a dramatic departure for Russian aircraft designers. Also called the Golden Eagle, the triplane features a forward-swept swing design and has a conventional tail. A couple of big intake doors on top of the aircraft fuselage are designed to provide greater air intake to the engine during take-off and in certain flight regimes.
