Filmmaking, teaching, and the colonial experience: an immigrant's account from "English" Canada of a story of American success

Article Abstract:

Canada's colonial culture and economic dependency on American distribution channels has stunted the growth of a vital film industry, a situation aggravated by the lack of private support for the arts and education. American movie studios dominate the local film industry. The government, however, can stimulate the production of more distinctly Canadian films if it funnels funding of useless projects such as Telefilm into low-budget features and more attractive theaters in key cities.
