From zygote to global cinema via Su Friedrich's films

Article Abstract:

American documentary filmmaker Su Friedrich turns out highly personal, individual works which nevertheless suggest the commonality shared by members of society. Her individual experiences on film evoke the similarities rather than the differences between sexes and cultures, making her works truly part of the current trend towards internationalism. These aspects are particularly evident in her films 'The Ties That Bind' and 'Sink or Swim.' However, the most prominent international film is still Peter Watkin's 14 1/2-hour 'The Journey.'

It is important to give students a chance to know independent filmmaking to understand that there are real alternatives to popular cinema and to give them a sense of film history. While many professors complain about lack of funds to host visiting filmmakers, funds can be arranged if they are creative and willing to work with the various departments in the college.
