It showed the perseverance of the writer and the filmmaker in depicting the life of Afro-Americans during their time. Portrayals of the historical figure Gen. George Custer on film have changed between 1941 and 1991 and yet preserve the image of Custer as a heroic character. The 1941 film 'They Died with Their Boots On' reflects the early perception of Custer's heroism and the savagery of American Indian tribes. However, the 1991 mini-series 'Son of the Morning Star' fails in its attempt to be politically correct in its narrow portrayal of Native Americans and explanation that Custer's fault lay in submitting to political control.
