Samuel Preston Bayard, 1908-1997

Article Abstract:

Sam Bayard, professor of English and Comparative Literature at Penn State, was known for his fieldwork of folk music in south-west Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia between 1928-1963. Out of it came "Hill Country Tunes" and "Dance To The Fiddle, March To The Fife." Bayard could could illustrate any point he needed to make during a lecture by singing or playing the appropriate folk-tune.

Edith Fowke, 1913-1996

Article Abstract:

Edith Fulton Fowke, a Canadian folklorist and author, died Mar. 1996 at the age of 83. Fowke earned a reputation early on as a song scholar and collector. Her recordings of singers from Ontario and west Quebec communities were featured on radio programs of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. She authored numbers books and was celebrated as Canada's national folklorist.

Kenneth Goldstein, 1927-1995

Article Abstract:

The death of Kenneth Goldstein in Nov 1995 left a great void in the folklore community. Goldstein amassed immense collections of songs from Scotland and Newfoundland and was known for his wide unparalleled knowledge in transatlantic traditions. His book, A Guide for Field Workers in Folklore, has become a standard reference work for the folklore discipline.
