$1-billion tobacco lawsuit thrown out

A New York district court has thrown out the federal government's landmark smuggling lawsuit against tobacco giant RJR-Macdonald. District Judge Thomas McAvoy claims the lawsuit contravenes a U.S. law that relieves U.S. courts from enforcing tax matters of other countries.

Smuggling meant gains for tobacco company

Article Abstract:

Montreal, Que.-based Imperial Tobacco Canada Ltd. was implicated in a cigarette smugling scheme. The scheme, which was spurred by a huge hike in tobacco taxes in Canada, was revealed in company documents.

B.C. bid to sue tobacco firms thrown out

The British Columbia Supreme Court has ended the province's effort recover smoking-related healthcare costs from tobacco firms. The court rejected the province's bid to recover billions of dollars.
