40% of share owners have all holdings in RRSPs: TSE survey

Article Abstract:

According to a survey commissioned by the Toronto Stock Exchange, 40% of Canadians who own stock have their entire shareholdings inside an RRSP or an RRIF. It also shows that 38% of Canadian share owners have all their stock in registered retired savings plan or a registered retirement income fund. Another 16% have at least three-quarters of their investments in registered instruments. In addition, the results indicate that 14% of Canadians have a registered educational savings plan set up for their children. The survey revealed a marked difference in the amount of foreign content in registered investments compared with non-registered portfolios.

Brokerage profits tumble

Article Abstract:

A new report from the Investment Dealers Association of Canada reveals that the profits of Canadian brokerage firms has fallen sharply. The report, which said that operating profits for brokers fell 44% in the third quarter of 2001, blamed the industry's problems on a declining economy.
