A Band-Aid for the Fund Industry's Broken Leg?

Article Abstract:

The House of Representatives is addressing the recent scandals involving the mutual fund industry by trying to change redemption fees and exploitation of market timing trades. Legislators are proposing an increase beyond the 2% fee rate for investors who withdraw their money from the funds prematurely or trade the funds too fre quently. Critics of this approach believe this may make the funds less desirable to investors, or even fail to prevent the abusive trading practices that have created this financial crisis.
