Members of Generation X have been negatively portrayed as being unengaged in politics and civic life and cynically materialistic. They have less interest in politics than the generations that preceded them, but they do share common beliefs in environmental protection, fiscal conservatism and economic populism. These core values could change US politics.

Radical thinkers in the 1990s have adopted many of the same arguments that were used in the 1890s. Both eras were plagued by new economic forces that were affecting labor. In the 1890s it was the development of a truly national economy, while in the 1990s is a global economy.

If the GDP is up why is America down?

Article Abstract:

Most Americans are not experiencing an economic boom in spite of improvements in the GDP and other indicators. A group called Redefining Progress proposes replacing the GDP with the genuine progress indicator, which would measure the social value of economic activity.
