A Silicon Valley spin on financing the arts; charity begins with a one-stop method of making contributions

Article Abstract:

The Silicon Valley Arts Fund may be a model for arts financing in cities that are growing quickly but do not have a tradition of cultural fundraising. The fund hopes to raise $20 million between the time it was established on Oct 14, 1992 and the end of 1993; it raised $6 million before it was formally introduced. The fund was formed by David Packard of HP to give arts groups more financial stability and to distribute money more fairly than is presently done. The fund is equally appealing to arts groups and businesses. Competitive arts groups have been meeting, and many businesses have been donating more money than usual. Seventy percent of the money will be the endowment, giving groups a stable source of money; 15 percent will help groups pay present deficits; and 12 percent will provide interest-free loans for new activities. In spite of increased fundraising, there may be little money for each of the many groups in Silicon Valley, and smaller groups fear they will be able to raise less money because donors will give to the fund instead of directly to them.
