A Year of Worry for Cambodia's Garment Makers

Article Abstract:

The impact of the termination of the US textile import quota regulation at the end of 2004 may have a devasting consequence for countries like Cambodia which know it cannot compete with China's cheap labor and high-volume production capacity. The import quotas had limited China's exports but now Cambodian manufacturers may not be able to compete on price. Another problem is that manufacturing costs are 25% higher than in China and complicated further by US companies that are under pressure to import from producers which provide employees overtime pay, union representation and bathroom breaks.
