A big step forward in tiny technology; switching gear may lift prospects for an array of miniature machines

Article Abstract:

Nortel Networks Corp. and Cronos Integrated Microsystems Inc. are two of the companies that are designing and manufacturing MEMS or microelectromechanical systems switches. These MEMS-based switches will be used with tiny mirrors to direct the flow of lightwaves more efficiently through fiber optic cables that comprise the Internet's backbone.

JDS Uniphase will write down $44.8 billion in asets

Article Abstract:

Possibly showing the biggest loss in corporate history, JDS Uniphase is writing down $44.8 billion accompanied by 7,000. The telecommunication network companies have no money to buy equipment so JDS and other component companies are looking at 6 to 9 months of potential losses. JDS is going to cut company costs by $700 million with hope of breaking even on $350 million quarterly revenue. Noting that these numbers are on paper only, JDS did make $65 million more cash than it used in the last quarter.
