A lama to the globe: the Dalai Lama looks beyond Tibet and meditates on his reincarnation as an ambassador of Buddhism

Article Abstract:

This article presents the changing outlook of the Dalai Lama, who at 64 still maintains a Tibetan government-in-exile in India so long as Chinese authorities prevent his return to Tibet, and who the globe-trotting ambassador of Buddhism. Relevant points include his comments on his political role, his role as a teacher of Tibetan Buddhism, and his interest in improving ties with the members of other religions.

Clinton has not yet nominated a US ambassador to Canada even though the position has been unoccupied since Mar 1996. Likely nominees include Philip Lader, an old Clinton friend from South Carolina, and Gordon Giffin, the 1992 and 1996 chair of the Clinton presidential campaign.

The Directorate of Operations of the Central Intelligence Agency is a dysfunctional operation that badly needs reform. CIA policies encourage agents to collect worthless information from incompetent foreign agents. Entrenched bureaucracy will make reform difficult.
