Dr. Robert Crystal hopes his research experiment in which an altered adeno cold virus carries laboratory-created genes into the lungs of cystic fibrosis patients successfully inhibits the development of congestion. His efforts may yield an effective treatment that extends the life span of the patients.

Protease inhibitor drugs such as Saquinavir are only working with around 70% of Canadian AIDS patients. However, even that rate of effectiveness may be leading to decreased prevention efforts by likely victims, resulting in climbing HIV infection rates, especially among Canadian women and aboriginals.
