AT&T, British Telecom reported in global talks

Article Abstract:

AT&T is negotiating an international alliance with British Telecom (BT) although no final agreement seems imminent. BT officials were reportedly holding discussions with other big US telecommunications firms as AT&T chief executive Michael Armstrong reportedly met with the officials in Britain. AT&T and British Telecom are maneuvering for positions in the rapidly growing global telecommunications sector which generates $700 billion in revenues annually. The sector is anticipated to reach $1 trillion by 2000 of which 90% will be opened to competition as governments prepare to repeal long-standing telecommunication monopolies.

Phone pacts: it's all on the line

Article Abstract:

U S West and Qwest say that 100,000 customers have enrolled in a 20-day-old program that permits consumers to buy long-distance phone service at 10 cents a minute. The much-talked about program also merges local and long-distance on a single bill and is the first marketing battle between a regional Bell and big-long distance carriers. Though critics say the deal could hurt consumers in the long run, the mentioned benefits of the program are immediate. Meanwhile, lower long-distance rates beyond U S West's 14-state region are already being anticipated as more companies launch similar deals.
