Mobile phone service providers are trying to expand networks and slash costs in an effort to meet soaring demand. Declining rates have made mobile phone service, which was once a luxury, a commodity. As a result, carriers such as AT&T are under growing pressure to spend more on infrastructure improvement to maintain service quality and accommodate more customers. Smaller competitors unable to afford or raise the necessary capital have been forced out of the market.

US West to slash price of speed Net service

Article Abstract:

U S WEST Inc has announced that it will reduce the rate of its digital subscriber line (DSL) service by 25% from $40 to $29.95 per month. DSL turns a regular phone line into a digital line that receives data at a speed of at least 256 kilobits per second. The move of US West is aimed to boost its 40% share of the domestic DSL market which is projected to have 2.7 million subscribers by 2002.
