Wireless leader: in Zeglis, AT&T trusts

Article Abstract:

AT and T Wireless CEO John Zeglis says he finds it difficult to dissociate from the image of a lawyer, having been the former chief legal counsel at AT&T. Zeglis assumes the top post of AT&T's wireless unit at a critical time, when AT&T is out of favor with investors. He also has to deal with intense market competition that will surely test his executive skills. He has been praise for his ability to compromise and stay put but critics say he is not an inspiring leader.

Lucent lures financial officer from Boeing

Article Abstract:

Former Boeing chief financial officer Deborah Hopkins has been hired by Lucent Technologies Inc following the departure of Donald Peterson who was made CEO of a Lucent networking unit that was spinned off. Hopkins has a reputation of being a turnaround specialist, which was amply proven in her stint at Boeing. Her entry at Lucent comes at a time when the firm is suffering from the disillusionment of investors due to the poor earnings garnered in the last quarter of 1999.

AT&T Wireless buys service in 3 major cities

Article Abstract:

AT and T Wireless Services Inc has acquired wireless phone systems in San Francisco, CA, San Diego, CA, and Houston, TX, for $3.3 billion, a move that also gives it another 1.3 million customers as well as $850 million in additional annual revenues. The systems were acquired from such companies as GTE, Bell Atlantic and Vodafone AirTouch, who are required to divest of their overlapping assets in order to form a nationwide wireless joint venture.
