MCI preparing TV ads to question A.T&T. reliability

Article Abstract:

MCI Communications Corp is reportedly planning a television commercial questioning AT&T's trustworthiness, following the disruption of long-distance services in the New York City area on Tuesday, Sep 17,1991. The disruption was attributed by AT&T to a power supply failure. There had previously been other serious disruptions. One, in 1990, was traced to a computer glitch, while another, in Jan 1991, happened when an AT&T work crew severed a fiber-optic cable. Aside from MCI's planned commercials, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is likely to look into the matter as well. The FCC is concerned because unreliable telecommunications systems could constitute a threat to public safety. For example, air traffic control operations in the New York City area were halted consequent to the Sep 17 outage.

MCI preparing TV ads to question A.T.&T. reliability

Article Abstract:

AT&T's long-distance telephone services in the New York City area were disrupted on Tuesday, Sep 17, 1991, because of a power supply failure. There previously had been other serious disruptions. One, in 1990, was attributed to a 'computer glitch,' and another, in Jan 1991, happened when an AT&T work crew severed a fiber-optic cable. MCI Communications Corp reportedly plans to take advantage of AT&T's difficulties by releasing commercials that suggest that AT&T's services are not reliable. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is likely to look into the matter as well. The FCC is concerned because unreliable telecommunications systems could constitute a threat to public safety. For example, air traffic control operations in the New York City area were halted consequent to the Sep 17 outage.
