After the apocalypse

Article Abstract:

The Australian military was among the first to respond with medical aid for the survivors of the tsunami that hit South Asia on 26 December 2004, sending in two teams of doctors within days of the disaster. The terrible working conditions the doctors faced in Aceh, Indonesia, the evacuation efforts of the American Navy and others, and the sheer stoicism of the Indonesian people in the face of the tragedy, is described.

Train in vain

Article Abstract:

Many residents in Northern Australia are livid at being denied an opportunity to see the transnational freight train roll into Darwin, but this was not because it was cancelled but because the train arrived an hour earlier than schedule. The train arrived early because it was empty due to which the handlers did not have to load or unload any cargo from the train but advertisers benefited from all the hype generated.

Jim Krakouer: the magic and the mayhem

Article Abstract:

The life of Jim Krakouer, a football superstar, who was later on jailed for smuggling the drugs, is described. Sean Gorman, the West Australian scholar, is planning to publish a thesis on the rise and fall of Krakouer and the racism that helped fuel it.
