Airlines raising prices yet again

Article Abstract:

All major airlines, except Southwest Airlines Co, on Oct 2, 2000 succeeded in raising fares again after four increases this year. While the latest increase will not affect discounted fares used by leisure travelers, it will hit business fliers using full-fare, unrestricted tickets for another $10-$30 more each way, depending on how far they are traveling. The latest fare increase will add $10 each way on trips of less than 500 miles, $20 for journeys of 500-999 miles and $30 for a trip of 1,000 miles or more.

Gas prices spill over $2 in Chicago

Article Abstract:

Gasoline prices in Chicago, IL, are averaging over $2 which gives the city the distinction of being the most expensive major city for gasoline in the US. Disgruntled drivers are blaiming gasoline station owners, the big oil companies, Middle Eastern oil producers, public officials and the White House for the increase in gasoline prices. However, the price increase has been officially attributed to the introduction of a new type of low- pollution gas which is costlier to produce.

Airlines aren't fuming over jet fuel's price surge - yet

Article Abstract:

Spot market indicators show that jet fuel prices have increased 38% after a one-month period. Prices were highest at 60 cents per gallon in 1997, compared to 43.6 cents for fuel from the Gulf Coast spot market. Prices were at 31.4 cents to a gallon in Mar 1999. Airlines have not been too worried over these increases since majority are protected against such fuel price fluctuations and many also hedge against price changes through futures market trading.
