Americans have more money invested in houses than stocks

Article Abstract:

Research on homeownership reveal that Americans have invested most of their wealth on their homes instead of stock holdings. Research also indicates that 59% of homeowners who owned stocks invested more in their homes and not in stocks in 1998. Despite the increase in homeownership which amounted to 67% in 1999, there is still a significant gap between whites and minorities who are homeowners. Over 73% of whites owned homes while it was only 47% for blacks.

Development bursting seams of sprawl laws

Article Abstract:

Nearly 25 states have passed laws to contain suburban sprawl since 1997, yet most of these new laws have been ineffective in combating uncontrolled growth in land use. Politicians confront a dilemma in supporting the 'smart growth' movement, which has become increasingly popular among all voters, while dealing with pressure from powerful lobby groups representing builders, developers and local governments. Pennylvania, however, is becoming a model for other state governments in getting municipalities and developers to work together to engage in regional planning and anti-sprawl initiatives.
