An electronic framework for fiction

Article Abstract:

Truby's Writers Studio's Storyline is a $295 program that automates the planning of a work of fiction, particularly screenplay. By using the software, a scriptwriter is reminded of story elements that have to be thought of while the multitude of ideas that evolve while writing the piece are tracked. Four brainstorming steps are invoked: Playground, Premise Pad, Action Tracks and Scene Outline, while the five shaping steps include Premise, Seven Steps, World Sequence, Visual Tracks and 22 Steps. Cinovation's Scriptware is a word processing program that automatically formats a script for submission. The program is able to bold names of characters, format scene headings, determine page breaks and 'continued' lines, and reformat revised materials. The $299 price includes upgrades to make up for missing features, such as the ability to create new formats easily.

A convenient 'cabinet.' (Above Software's Golden Retriever 2.0b, Claris Corp.'s Retrieve It! filing systems) (Software Review) (Peripherals) (Evaluation)

Article Abstract:

Above Software's Golden Retriever 2.0b filing software stores electronic documents in folders within drawers, much like storing paper documents in filing cabinets. Images of six file drawers are shown on the opening screen; users can label the drawers and open them by clicking. Golden Retriever 2.0b allows labels to go beyond the eight characters plus three characters extension that DOS imposes. Files and folders can be manipulated Windows fashion. Claris Corp's $89 Retrieve It! filing software for the Apple Macintosh allows users to find files by their names or part of their names, or by searching for text within the files. The program lists all the files that contain the specific words users are searching. An added feature is a barking sound when all the files have been found.
