An uncivil war

Article Abstract:

About 600 F-DTL soldiers known as petitioners, all of them from the west Timor abandoned their barracks complaining they had been overlooked for promotions. Easterners, who run East Timor's military as a reward for the leading the 24-year insurgency made some offensive remarks about how westerners were Indonesian collaborators. This petty argument turned into the nation toxic as a result the government had to call for foreign assistance and Australian troops to contain widespread violence.

Bang off target

Article Abstract:

US marine fighter squadrons routinely drop dummy bombs on Australia's Northern Territory, generally restricting the damage to within the vast confines of the practice bombing range at the Defense-owned Delamere station. One of the bombs, a high-explosive GBU-12, a 500-pound laser-guided device, went astray and landed within the vicinity of a manned bombing-range control tower on Delamere, but fortunately, there were no casualties.

Depopulate and perish

Article Abstract:

The idea to close the remote Aboriginal communities in Australia is seen by many as a part of a deliberate campaign to depopulate the bush and shift people to urban centers to save on health and education costs. It is stated that emptying the communities would worsen the plight of the people living there and would create a cultural vacuum on Australia's bush landscape.
