Apple ready to introduce delayed Macintosh system

Article Abstract:

Apple Computer Inc will introduce its System 7 operating system, for Macintosh microcomputers, on Mon, May 13, 1991. The company hopes that System 7's capabilities, which will allow for improved exchanges of data between computers and between programs, will help to increase sales of Apple's high-end products. Apple had long emphasized the high end of its product line, but in Oct 1990, the company shifted its marketing strategy, concentrating on lower-priced microcomputers to gain market share. Apple's least-expensive machine, the Macintosh Classic is doing well, but analysts say Apple needs to do better at the high end. System 7, with its advanced capabilities, is likely to be most useful to users with Macs that are connected to networks in corporate settings. System 7 will ship with all new Macintoshes starting in Jun 1991. Upgrades will be available for less than $100, possibly for as little as $50.

A new Macintosh family for your home

Article Abstract:

Apple introduces three new microcomputers as part of the low-cost Performa line. The Apple Macintosh Performa 200, 400 and 600 will be sold at department stores, office supply stores and electronics stores, but not at conventional computer outlets. The new computers range in price from about $1,250 to about $3,000, depending on what prices the vendors set for these machines. The Performa 200 resembles the Mac Classic II, while the 400 resembles the Mac LC II. All of the new Performas include new system software that make the computers even easier to use. The Performas also come with a year of toll-free support and a year of on-site service in the event that the machines cannot be fixed with a phone consultation. All of the Performas use the 68030 microprocessor. The 400 and 600 do not come with monitors, but Apple is offering the Performa Display and Display Plus monitors.
