Are young people in worse physical condition today than they were 20 years ago?

Article Abstract:

The US Surgeon General's 1996 report on physical activity found that participation by young people between 12 and 21 in physical activities is declining compared to the early 1990s. Almost 50% of young people do not exercise vigorously and only 19% of high school students reported 20 minutes or more of daily physical activity. However, participation in high school athletics and summer sports programs and camps is growing, partially due to Title IX's support for female athletics. Interest in physical activities, such as skiing, swimming and tennis, has also increased.

At issue: are baby boomers trying too hard to stay young?

Article Abstract:

Observers debate whether the baby boomer generation is becoming obsessive about remaining young or if they are merely trying to stay healthy in anticipation of increased life expectancy. While some argue that boomers are concentrating too hard on physical aspects of aging at the expense of enjoying life, others claim that increased longevity is fostering a new responsibility to take care of oneself.

Hard-core users

Article Abstract:

Proposals to shift law enforcenment funding trowards treatment programs for controlled substance users has been met with criticism from experts. It is believed that treatment policies would not have an effect on those who are classified as as chronic or hard-core drug users. It is felt that the proposed drug treatment policy should be regarded as a health rather than a law enforcement issue.
